Rustic Scottish Barn Wedding - Robyn & Andrew

I have the loveliest rustic Scottish wedding to share with you today! Roby and Andrew’s barn wedding at ‘The Cow Shed’ in Fife was full of thoughtful DIY touches including a hale bale lounge for guests, beer from their very own brewery, and a fabulous lighting display Robyn’s brother created. With a pretty peach colour palette, boys in smart kilts, and a stunning cake, it’s a wedding I know you’re going to fall in love with. For those of you who are fans, there was a little Star Wars twist too which was so cool!

Robyn wore a stunning strapless, tulle and lace, corset back Maggie Sottero gown which her Mother had first seen in a wedding shop in Edinburgh and paired it with our vintage ‘Lottie Elliot’ lace ankle boots. You can see how gorgeous she looked in the beautiful images captured by Ally Stuart Photography. Oh, and of course who can resist a groom in a Scottish kilt!

So how did you meet your husband and how did he propose?

Andrew and I used to go to the same pub quiz (on different teams) where I eventually began working behind the bar that he would prop up on a Saturday night. We began to spend more time together and eventually we ended up together. Five years later, we were on holiday in Orlando, Florida when he proposed – well, a dolphin proposed for him. We visited Discovery Cove and did the dolphin swim experience. They said they had to retake some of my photos so we did a training exercise with the dolphin. The dolphin swam up to me and handed me a buoy and on the back was ‘Robyn will you marry me?’.

Where did you get married and who did you invite?

We got married at The Cow Shed, a rustic barn in Crail on the Fife coastline in Scotland on 30th June 2018. It has a gorgeous old barn with a marquee roof, enclosed in a beautiful courtyard with stone walls. It’s surrounded by farm fields with views out to the Firth of Forth. We had the ceremony under the stony arches in the courtyard with around 70 guests of family and friends, with another 70 friends and colleagues joining us in the evening. We were also blessed with stunning weather, we had clear blue skies and glorious sunshine with temperatures in the mid twenties (celsius) all day.

What was the main inspiration for your wedding?

We had a very DIY wedding, we weren’t restricted by our venue to certain suppliers so we had complete control over everything. We had a very relaxed, rustic chic-vibe. The venue itself is simple and beautiful so we didn’t do much to it, we augmented it with rustic log slices and candles and lots of foliage and created a “lounge” for our guests with haybales and old coffee sacks while my brother-in-law created an amazing lightning display. Our flowers were warm and rustic, ivory and peach roses that matched the colours of my dress and lots of green foliage with pops of blue orchids for something different. We are also both quite nerdy and fans of Star Wars so there was a loose Star Wars theme in our invitations and table decorations. My husband and I also recently started our own brewery so we were able to have our inaugural beer on the tables as favours and a keg of our own beer on the bar which was a really nice personal touch.

Tell us about your wedding look

My wedding dress shopping couldn’t have been more different from the traditional. My mother was in Edinburgh for her birthday and saw a dress in the window of the shop, while I was working away in Aberdeen. She texted me pictures and I knew it was the one right there and then. I told her to buy it as it was on sale in the window and I knew it wouldn’t stay long. She wouldn’t buy me a dress I hadn’t tried on but luckily they agreed to hold it so I tried it on the next weekend and loved it. I took it home the same day (two years before my wedding day!). It is a gorgeous Maggie Sottero mermaid dress, with a strapless sweetheart neckline and corset back. It’s a beautiful soft peach blush colour with a layer of ivory lace over the bodice that begins to fade out when it reaches the skirt which is an explosion of tulle.

What made you choose a pair of House of Elliot boots for your wedding day?

I originally saw House of Elliot’s boots in a wedding article online and I knew I had to have them when I saw them and I went to order them right there and then. I couldn’t have imagined wearing anything else. The intricate ivory lace detail perfectly matched the lace on my dress. They looked rustic and victorian which my sister called ‘so me’. They had the added benefit of being super comfy and incredibly easy to walk in. Even though my dress had loads of layers of tulle that you couldn’t see anything under, I made the point of hoicking it up and showing them off to anyone who would look!

What did you love the most about your wedding day?

If I could do the whole day over again, I would relive it in a heart beat. Just to marry the man of my dreams surrounded by friends and family was truly magical. It meant so much to us that everyone had come to spend time with us, we had lots of guests travel up from England and down from Shetland. It meant so much to us that they came all the way and stayed the weekend to celebrate with us. I also never met my father-in-law, who died suddenly before Andrew and I met, so it was touching to see all of Andrew’s family and hear how much his Dad would have been proud of our wedding. And the food! I was so full of amazing food that I didn’t need to eat the next day. We had an amazingly selection of canapes, a 3 course dinner and a delicious hog roast for our evening buffet. Our chefs started cooking it at 2pm in the courtyard and it slow roasted for 8 hours. I can still smell it now. We also had the most stunning cake. I would love to eat it all again.

What pearls of wisdom would you share with future brides who are planning their wedding?

The pearl of wisdom I was given which was especially helpful in times of great stress and many tears is that no one knows what its meant to look like so don’t sweat about the little things. They don’t know and they don’t care, they are there because they want to be there with you. Your guests are there to celebrate your wedding and will have a great time, they won’t notice how many of your chair bows fall off during the course of the day. I had such an amazing time that even the fact it was so hot that my hair curls deflated and my makeup melted off meant nothing. And if you have a menu choice card for food, staple it to the back of your RSVP. You have no idea how many people don’t send it back with their rsvp and you gotta chase them up for their food choices.

Anything else you would like to add?

Take time out for yourself and your husband/wife. We only really got time together at 1.30am when we stayed to take all the cushion covers off. Enjoy some time to yourselves. We spent a lot of time going around our guests and chatting and felt so guilty only having 5 minutes with everyone before we were pulled away – don’t stress about it! Everyone understands and they’re not mad! Also, eat! One of the waitresses followed me around with my own personal tray of canapes which was an amazing touch.
